During a walk around a nearby town a few days ago,
I noticed two young women in their early thirties, who were identically dressed
and yet they were not twins but sisters. What I overheard, when close to them,
confirmed that the taller, thinner and stern faced one was definitely the boss
over her younger sibling who had a pleasanter faced. She also showed all the
signs of being resigned to being at the beck and call of the other. Everything
about the two made me think of Edith and Emily whom I mentioned and described
in Chapter Sixteen of ‘The Will to Deceive’. This made me wonder as to the
reason, or situation, that caused the younger to be so subservient. Was it
financial or some other reason? Times change, and yet some things continue to
happen, too often unhappily so.
